Portuguese Citizenship for Sephardic Jews

Thank you for choosing us to apply for your Portuguese citizenship!

The application for Portuguese naturalisation has two main stages:

  1. Recognition of your eligibility for a Portuguese citizenship by the Jewish community in the city of Porto.
  2. Applying for citizenship in the Portuguese government and obtaining a Portuguese birth certificate

Step 1: Proof of Sephardic Jewish heritage and Jewish Community approval

According to the Portuguese Nationality Law, the applicant is asked to prove family origin and connection to the Jews of Spain.

This process is done by us and approved by the Jewish community in Porto.

To do this we need photographs of the following documents:

  • Your birth certificate
  • A clear photocopy of your passport
  • A 'family tree' document  (we will prepare this for you)
  • Proof of Jewish religion  (ketubah, a letter from the rabbi, etc.)
  • Proof of sephardic heritage – photocopy of population registration, ID card, etc .. (we will provide guidance based on your personal circumstances)

After receiving the documents and preparing the request, you will receive approval in principle with which we can continue the process for Portuguese nationality.

Notice!

If you do not have clear proof of heritage, or you are not sure how to proceed, we will be happy to help.

Step 2: Your application with the Portuguese government

Once we receive the approval in principle, you will be asked to pay a donation to the Jewish community (included in the first payment instalment), in order to issue the official certificates.  This takes on average about 8 weeks.

Whilst waiting for the certificates to be issued, we will prepare for your application to the government.

Documents required to prepare your file:

  • Birth certificate (original, issued up to 6 months from the date of submission)
  • Certificate for name change, if necessary (original, issued up to 6 months from the date of submission)
  • Valid notarised copy of your passport (we will arrange that for you)
  • A Portuguese power of attorney (we will arrange that for you)
  • Criminal record from your country of residence, or any other country you have resided in the last 10 years (we will provide further guidance and details)

How much does it cost?

The total cost and fees to apply with us costs £2,150, which includes all legal fees, admin and translations.

Payment is done in three instalments.
